Volunteering

 Since my plans to do any events in 2024 are gone, that doesn't mean i can't still be involved in the sport that i love and have put so much time and energy into over the years.

So in the meantime, i am volunteering with parkrun and other events that i have taken part in the past and will do again in the future.

This is good as i can still be there at the events and soaking up the vibe of the day plus also using my experiences from doing the event myself to support and encourage others.

Finish line experiences at the Dual

 Recently I took part in the final Dual event as a volunteer. My role was on the beer tent, at first I thought it would just be handing out drinks to the finishers. It became more than that as we got to the finishers coming through in various states.  We got to tell who had given it their all while out on the course and also to celebrate with them on their efforts on the day. It was great to chat with some of them and hear their stories from the course plus since I have done the event myself, it was good to share those common experiences with them. We got to see a whole range of emotions from the finishers which I can surely identify with as I have been there myself. It was also great to talk with the other volunteers on the day and also help with any general questions while wandering around the event base when not on beer tent duty. I also got to experience more of what goes on behind the scenes to put on and run such an event.

Initial Injury reaction

 When I first rolled my ankle in a ditch way back in early January (5/1/24), apart from the ow that really hurt. The next reaction is oh heck what have i done. The fact that I was able to stand up again and walk very slowly the last 300 metres home made me think it's not that bad, I can still weight bear. The real reaction to the injury happened when we went to A&E back in Auckland on Friday (6th Jan), when they said you have broken your ankle. Well, there goes my running event plans for the year as I had planned to complete in my 2nd Ultra at the Trail Trilogy event in September and compete in my 5th Auckland Marathon to get my Roadster status in the Marathon distance. Once I had been sorted with a Moonboot and given a plan ahead which included starting Physio for the injury.
